BOOKBINDING EXPEDITION

Spelunk into prehistoric cave drawing, uncover accent Egyptian Hieroglyphics; go tubing down the modern art tunnel, and climb onto pop-up book structures! Discover this abridged history of communication, as you create “books” with a variety of natural and recycled; materials writing/ drawing tools, and different surface design techniques. Construct and illustrate sculptural, historical, and traditional one-of-a-kind books, as you discover visual narratives and descriptive words: write poems, tell stories, make jokes!

CAPOEIRA BRAZILLIAN MARTIAL ARTS

Capoeira Angola is a non-violent, unique Afro-Brazilian martial art fight dance. Learn self-defense movements, songs and rhythms, and how to play on Afro-Brazilian musical instruments. You will perform Capoeira in a community setting that is fun and engaging. CAST A SPELL!

Use classic casting techniques, working with clay, recycled glass, and plaster molds to make your art into a fired glass object, animal or ornament: you can use your creativity to make a stunning Glass keepsake! Then fast forward to the future to explore the cutting edge technology of 3-d printing. Examine the link between form and function, and artistic creation in 3 ­­dimensions. CHINESE ARTS

In this camp children will actively explore the Cultural Arts of China. Jump on board the Dragon boat! It’s time to get into Traditional Chinese Arts: Painting, Calligraphy, Music, Dance, and Cuisine. Join us for this fantastic voyage to the other side of the world!

CREATE-A-PLAY

Teacher: Gemini Theatre
Ages: 7-10 & 11-14

Campers will create a play using a non-musical version of an actual Gemini Theater Production. Young actors focus on building characters, working with scripts, and putting together a “mini-show” without the pressure of full costumes or sets. Actors will prepare smaller costume pieces and props to further their part. Parents and friends are invited to an informal performance during final half hour of Friday’s camp!

DANCE! DANCE! DANCE!

Teacher: Kelly-Strayhorn Theatre

Many genres of Dance will be explored in this fun and exciting camp where kids will move with the groove and dance their way to the stars! (Children will be grouped by age.)

DIGITAL COMMUNITY

This is a photography camp about your hometown. What does America look like? Document where you live—your neighborhoods, families, friends, and schools using your iphones, cameras, or whatever works. Then, using Photoshop and the Internet, work with the digital images you took to create an online interactive digital community! A limited supply of cameras will be available for on site use. DOLL MAKING

Teacher: Joyce Compton

Come make dolls from up-cycled materials, such as old tee shirts, pillowcases, fabulous fabric, yarn, buttons, beads and other found objects. Design, sew and knit your doll’s clothes. Even build movable environments for your dolls to live and play in! This offer is not available in stores: these are unique one-of-a kind dolls of your very own!

DRAW THE WORLD!

Teacher: Alberto J. Almarza

Put the world into perspective! Learn to create 3-d illusions with 2-dimensional forms, shading and other useful drawing techniques. Use graphite, pencil and colored ink. Find your way out of an Escher painting and into your own imaginary world on paper. EXPERIMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Get back to historic photographic arts! Paint your own photographic paper in blue cyanotype and old-fashioned brown tones. Create giant photomontage, collages, and special effects, like multiple exposure, and solarization. Make use of otherwise obsolete vintage darkroom equipment (like enlargers, timers and wet chemistry) to channel the power of light, and turn your images into beautiful handmade prints!

FABRIC ARTS & FASHION ¢ENTS

Design and fashion arty clothes and accessories made from up-cycled remnants and found materials. Use traditional quilting as well as contemporary art fads to piece together quilted squares, weavings and “trash” sculpture! Glam it up and walk the runway at camp fashion show, modeling your cool wearable works of art!

FLOAT YOUR BOAT

Using anything we can find, we will construct water canals and build boats to float and race downstream. Bring a swimsuit and towel; stay cool by the inflatable pool, playing with your personalized boats and other waterproof creations!

Go back to the beginning of time where storytelling began as an oral tradition through words, art, music, dance, and herbalism. Discover the power of herbs that was once a part of everyday life. Collect and use plants to create crafts and prepare herbs. Illustrate and press your plants into an art journal. Tell stories through hieroglyphics, petroglyphs, dancing and drumming! Weave plants and stories together by entering the surreal world of the past while rediscovering prehistoric arts!

IMPROV AND ACTING

Are you ready to challenge yourself with the art of Improvisational Acting? This popular style of performance dares you to think on your feet and build skills in developing scenes-without the use of a script! Learn games and formats similar to the hit show Whose Line Is It Anyway? High energy and participation is the key to success in this camp! Family and friends are invited to an informal improv show to be performed during the last half hour of camp!

LITTLE AUTOMA

Gather a better understanding of movement and how to make automata. Get behind the principals of physics as you explore the history of motion with designer icons like Leonardo Da Vinci and Galileo. With an emphasis on drawing and design, fabricate your kinetic art pieces with a variety of repurposed materials: construct mobiles, pop-ups and interactive automata shadowboxes. Once your cams and gears are activated: see your inventions come to life!

MINIATURE MARVELS

Use miniature mechanics and technology, recycled and natural materials. Light up your rooms with electricity; make furnishings, working doors and windows and motorize fans. Design houses with your own blueprints; combine your imagination with real tools and even a 3-d printer* to make your perfect miniature marvels! (*See more like this in Cast A Spell!)

MINIATURE WORLDS

With small tools, but great visions, construct and build your own little universe. Using simple materials, such as cardboard, papier-mâché, paint, sticks, stones, and other found objects, create and decorate a miniature landscape! Is your world a desert or a mountain? Does it have trees? Rivers? Or a volcano? Maybe a farm? What do you see in your world? Complete, and transform your tiny terrain into a magical diorama box of your miniature world!

MOVING PICTURE ADVENTURE

Put together a story from beginning to end with movable art! What makes an enticing story? What is a foreground, middle ground or background? Draw your favorite toys and animals into a plot! When you are ready, roll it all up into a completed movable art piece that tells can tell a tale by moving the scrolls. Then, get ready to act out! You’re on! Be an angry bird, a car horn, or a barking dog! Be free to be you or anything you want in your motion picture adventure!

MY SECRET GARDEN

Using natural materials and living plants, watch your flowers and fauna grow and bloom! Create a magical courtyard with fountains, stonewalls, pathways, gazebos and trellis entranceways. Then slyly sculpt, sew and paint imaginary friends, fairies and gnomes for your secret garden!

NATURAL INSPIRATION

Put a magnifying glass on our natural surroundings! Take short daily group walks (weather permitting) to gather ideas. Look for beautiful patterns in nature, while examining closely what we find: leaves, rocks, tree trunks, plants, even bugs! Each day we’ll come back ready to create something inspired by what we saw. Collect things like twigs, leaves, flowers, pinecones and acorns to use in your artwork! Get creative with a range of media including printmaking, rubbings, painting and collage-all made from your natural inspiration!

PAPER MAKING & PRINTING

Come draw from nature, animals and the things you love to make paper and books from plants and recycled materials! Print your sketches and creative writing onto your hand-made paper with an antique hand-crank press; then bind them into beautiful one-of-a-kind books! PICTURE PICTURE

Learn from the masters! We will recreate our own versions of artwork by Monet, Picasso, Pollack, Duchamp, Warhol and Freeman. Find your inner genius by using your hands to draw, paint, sculpt and squish. We will use crayon, squirt paint, tempera, finger paint, paper, canvas, and found objects to create small to mural sized art. On our final camp day we will display our Museum of Fine Art in the gallery for a special reception for parents and friends! (Painting by Irma Freeman)

PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY

Using everyday objects create your own pinhole cameras, making everything from tiny spy cameras to giant room sized cameras! Learn basic darkroom photography by printing your images with traditional photographic equipment and chemistry. Make truly remarkable film bending photography and extraordinary black and white images on light sensitive paper!

PLAYDATE ON STAGE

Do introductory dramatics, designed for you as a young actor. Explore the most basic elements of acting and creative expression. Learn songs, speech exercises and stage movement. Play theater games, puppetry, and acting out stories, such as The Three Little Pigs. Get melodramatic while getting to know other campers on stage!

PUPPETS TAKE PITTSBURGH

Head off on an adventure to take over Pittsburgh through Puppetry! Construct your own puppet characters and props using papier-mâché, found objects and paint. Create sound effects, puppet voices and learn movement skills. Collaborate on a set and storyline to culminate into a performance at the end of the week. Take this town by puppet storm and transform it onto your own whimsical version of Pittsburgh!

SCULPTURE PUPPET PARARDE

Build unique sculptures, puppets, props and sets with up-cycled materials, papier-mâché, fun fabric, cardboard and wood. Throughout the week stage puppet shows at our own puppet theater. Then, Lights! Camera! Action! Be a puppet star on close circuit Puppet Television! By Friday, get ready to perform a special puppet performance for parents and friends!

SYNERGYDANCE FOR KIDS

Move your body like fire, air, earth and water! SynergyDance is an expressive dance using the 5 elements at its foundation to broaden the mind, balance the body and inspire the spirit. THINGS THAT ROLL, HOVER, LIGHT UP & TAKE OFF!

Combine art and technology by creating moving solar sculptures, awesome gravity cars and shooting rocket ships, balloon and hovercraft. Out of found, collected and recycled materials, use combustion, gravity, helium, hydro, solar and wind power to make these fun and far-out toys that roll, hover, light up and take off!

TRASH TO TREASURE ISLAND

You are shipwrecked on your own fantasy island! Walk barefoot in the sand, plant real trees and swing from vines! Make friends with furry animals, and uncover skeletons in rock filled caves! Flood tidal pools, stream waterfalls and explode volcanoes! Set up a campsite, hang out in your hammock, or climb up into a tree house…but don’t forget to hide your pirate booty! Escape from thieving gnarly buccaneers passing by on ships sailing on the high seas! Trade cargo and mini treasure maps with other campers. Then, “Land ho!” Grab your compass: the search is on for buried treasure!

WITCHES AND WIZARDS

It’s the Witching Hour! Time to go to the mystery school of magic. Are you interested in the weird world of plants and the universe? We will discuss stories about plants, roots and seeds; dye with plants and more. You will prepare extremely bitter, ugly green and very gooey plants to create tricks for your own magic and crafty use!

YOGA & ZUMBA

YOGA: Become a cloud, a mountain, a frog, or a whale! Through breathing and movement exercises we will relax our minds, letting our breath shape us, like the wind shapes the clouds. Learn new ways to balance, stretch, flex, and make funny noises as we make shapes and postures that let us become dogs, cows, peacocks, waterfalls, and dinosaurs. Find out how amazing Yoga makes your body and mind feel while having a ton of fun! Kids of all ages are welcome!

ZUMBA: Zumba is a Latin-based form of aerobics — a blend of body sculpting movements and easy-to-follow dance steps. The routines feature interval training sessions with fast and slow rhythms and resistance. The benefits of Zumba are not just physical, but emotional, and mental as well. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you’ve got a Zumba® class! Join the party and make new friends!! No prior dance experience needed
